1980 - 2025 A.D. is a time period in the Gregorian Calendar that the Machines used on the final and current design of the matrix. The real history is unknown, but it is set approximately in the time period right before the humans were on the verge of creating advanced technology which eventually made way to the Machines.
Agent Smith described this period as "the peak of human civilization".
