1980 - 2025 A.D. is the approximate Gregorian Calendar time period in that the Machines used on the final and current design of the Matrix. While the real history is unknown at least to the Humans, it is the alleged point in time right before the humans were on the verge of creating advanced technology which eventually made way to A.I. and the Machines.
Agent Smith described this period as "the peak of human civilization".
Neo also knew the abbreviation of Artificial Intelligence when he was in the construct with Morpheus meaning in this time period, humanity were constantly studying the technology field during this era and they would eventually finally achieve their goal at some point during the 21st Century and Mankind would celebrate this achievement.
