I'm sure you can understand why our beloved parent company, Warner Brothers, has decided to make a sequel...that's the thing about stories: they never really end, do they?”
― The Matrix Resurrections
Around the time that The Matrix Resurrections was released in theaters in December 2021, rumors began to circulate that Warner Bros. is considering production on a sequel to The Animatrix, an anthology of animated shorts set in the world of The Matrix franchise that was released to critical acclaim in 2003.
There is evidence to back up the suspicion that Warner Bros. is at least considering new spin-off material. The LinkedIn profile for John Gaeta, one of the producers on the original Animatrix, now lists him as working on "Animatrix 2.0". Moreover, a new project appeared on IMDb Pro with the title "Animatrix: Ø for Ørigin".
While these links appear to be legitimate and not fan submissions, this is no guarantee that Warner Bros. will actually commission new spinoff material, but it does seem to indicate that they are at least considering it.
