“ Always another way.
”― The Keymaker[src]
A backdoor is a type of door that can be used to access nearly any part of the Matrix.
Within the construct, they are a series of dark green doors in a seemingly endless white corridor, unlocked by a special made key. These were used by Programs to quickly get from one place to another. In code, these were simply loopholes. At one end of the corridor was a door to the most special room, including the door to The Source. Backdoors act as a kind of shortcut hyperlinking system.
While backdoors are part of the Matrix, Operators cannot see the code of people who enter their hallway - it is a sort of under-layer to the main construct of the Matrix, containing shortcuts to many other places.
In the films, the main users of the corridor were Seraph and The Oracle. They have also been used by Neo, Morpheus, The Keymaker, and several of the virus Smith.
In The Matrix Resurrections, while trying to escape from a group of agents in Neo's Modal, Bugs is pulled to safety through a backdoor by a program version of Morpheus. Unlike the original backdoors, the hallway that Morpheus rescues Bugs through only contains four backdoors. One leads to a key shop, one to Neo's apartment, one to the Lafayette Hotel and the fourth to outside of a movie theater. Morpheus reveals that he had found the backdoors because no one was ever in the key shop, causing him to start looking. After Morpheus takes a Redpill, the two attempt to use the backdoors to reach an exit in the Lafayette, but accidentally end up back in the key shop again. Chased by Agent White and another Agent, the two flee through the backdoor to the movie theater and manage to get to the exit with Seq's help.
