“ This is the Construct. It's our loading program. We can load anything... From clothing to equipment, weapons, training simulations; anything we need.
”― Morpheus, on the Construct[src]
The Construct was a virtual work space created to run simulations. It was also used as a loading program to launch or create virtual objects in preparation for whenever Zion operatives hacked into the Matrix.
Appearance[]
Created by Resistance members, the Construct, upon load, initially appeared as a dimensionless, empty, white arena. Once some programs were launched however, the Construct's simulated reality could be made generally indistinguishable from that of the Matrix, and could be made to follow or break from the basic rules of physics. It came with an integrated decoder, which allowed the activity within the simulation to be watched as a video feed on the operator's monitors, in the same manner as a security guard can watch a closed-circuit security camera feed,[1] and as opposed to interpreting the green lines of code that were getting logged when connected to the Matrix itself. Those who entered the Construct appeared already clothed but the outfit could also simply be changed within the Construct.
History[]
Morpheus used the Construct to educate Neo on the truth about the Matrix, showing him what the Earth actually looked like in their present time. Not long after, he challenged Neo to "show (him)" the skills he had learned via his headjack uploads, using simulations to assess Neo's progress. Later, in preparation for rescuing Morpheus from Agents in a heavily-fortified government building, Neo and Trinity entered the Construct to gather the weapons and bombs needed for their rescue mission.
Mouse used the Construct in a less wholesome fashion, mostly for sexual encounters with the woman in red, whom he created. Thadeus and Jue of the Osiris combined business and pleasure in their sparring program, while Cis had her loyalty tested while in her favorite simulation.
The Construct was also used by Niobe and Ghost in preparation to retrieve the emergency message from the Osiris, as well as when Ghost readied to spar with Trinity[2].
60 years after the events of the original trilogy, a resurrected Neo was jacked into the Construct by the crew of the Mnemosyne, who were desperate to keep him alive. In the Construct, Morpheus tells Neo of the events after The Matrix Revolutions and duels him.
